The topic of International Law has always been of great interest to me. Through participating in Model United Nations, exploring international case law, and following contemporary global conflicts in the news, I was compelled to further my research in international territorial disputes. As a history student living in Singapore, I was especially curious to learn more about the ICJ case of Sovereignty over Pedra Branca/Pulau Batu Puteh, Middle Rocks and South Ledge between Singapore and Malaysia. Beyond viewing the judgment as a purely doctrinal application of international law, I came to realise that international law is flexible, and often adapts to contextual factors such as micro-territory characteristics and the nature of historical evidence. My interest in analysing this judgement in greater depth propelled a research process that spanned several months and eventually led to my submission to The Schola. The journey to completing my paper has taught me the complexities and challenges of academic research, while also deepening my appreciation for the relationship between law, history, and international dispute resolution. Outside of academics, I enjoy reading classic literature, going on nature walks, and spending quality time with friends and family. This experience has further strengthened my interest in pursuing future studies in law, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to share my work through The Schola.
