After Submission

What Happens Next?

Thank you for submitting your work to The Schola. Every submission is thoroughly assessed during a 2–3 week review period.

  • Accepted: Authors will receive an email from the editorial office with the outcome and any next steps after the review period.
  • Not Accepted: The decision will be available on the submission order page in your account after the review period.

Understanding the Decision

If your manuscript is not selected for publication, please remember that this is a normal part of academic publishing and does not reflect your potential as a researcher. Receiving a decision that isn’t what you hoped for can be challenging, especially when you’ve put significant time and effort into your work. Here are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • The Impersonal Nature of Selection: Rejection in academic publishing is often based on factors such as the journal’s scope, the number of available publication slots, or the alignment with the journal’s thematic priorities. It’s rarely a judgment of your intellect or potential.
  • Rejection as a Point of Learning: Every submission, regardless of the outcome, provides valuable experience. Take some time to reflect on the process – from research and writing to submission. What did you learn? What could you do differently next time?
  • The Importance of Persistence: Many successful researchers have faced numerous rejections throughout their careers. Persistence and a willingness to learn and improve are key to long-term success in academia. See this as one step in your broader educational journey, a minor hurdle that builds resilience.
  • Considerations for Future Submission: Due to the high volume, individual feedback on unsuccessful submissions is generally not feasible. However, inquiries after the decision period about the general suitability of your work may receive broad guidance.

Supporting Your Academic Growth

Regardless of the outcome of this particular submission, we commend you for taking the initiative to engage in research and the publication process. We strongly encourage you to explore the academic resources provided on our site as you continue to develop your research skills and strengthen the foundation of academic excellence. Your willingness to share your work is a significant step toward academic excellence, and we hope you will continue to pursue your scholarly interests.

Opportunities for Improvement

If your essay partially meets the selection criteria, we may ask for a revision. A revise and resubmit decision is preferable to a rejection. It indicates that your manuscript has potential and could be deemed publishable with suggested changes. Consider it an opportunity to enhance your writing skills and improve your essay. Editorial comments and revision timelines vary per manuscript. Only those who have successfully fulfilled the revision requests are ultimately published.

Recognition of Outstanding Work

In the fall, we celebrate outstanding student work by recognizing notable essays published in the previous academic year. These essays, formerly known as Magna essays, are selected for their intellectual courage and ingenuity, showcasing original thought and critical thinking. Authors of these distinguished pieces are recognized each September. While the Magna distinction was previously awarded quarterly, it is now an annual honor bestowed upon the most exceptional essays.

Publication

The journal is published in the first week of each issue month: March, June, September, and December. Authors receive digital copies of their published essays to facilitate scholarly sharing and verify publication, though works are not assigned a DOI. The official author’s copy issued by the journal features distinct front and back covers to deter tampering.
